71) Brazil: Government is concerned about the oral health of the population

The programme Brazil Sorridente the Ministry of Health delivered on Thursday, August 19, in Lavras, dental equipment for improvement of care in the area of oral health through the Unified Health System (SUS). The ceremony took place in the entry foyer of city hall, the 13h with the presence of municipal authorities and the national coordinator of oral health, Gilberto Pucca.
The equipment for the oral health was given to mayor Jussara Menicucci, in the presence of the deputy mayor Ennio Mendes, the Municipal Health Secretary Antonio Moura, the coordinator of the programme in Lavras, the dentist Alysson Matiolli Magno, coordinator of the Program for Health Family (PSF) Maria Salete Sales Pereira, of course, representatives of the Dental Unilavras, the delegate of the Regional Council of Dentistry, the dentist Eduardo Pires Cardoso, the superintendent of Oral Health, Antonio Fontes, president of the Municipal Health Council, Adjamar Veríssimo and health professionals from Lavras.
The council received 29 of the Federal Government a variety of equipment such as air compressor, dental chair, dental clinics and others. The coordinator of National Oral Health, Gilberto Pucca Junior, spoke and emphasized the performance of the Federal Government in health. The mayor Jussara Menicucci also spoke of the work done in Lavras health and thanked, on behalf of the council, the donations of the Federal Government.
Currently Lavras account with 14 teams of oral health, responsible for improving primary health care free in the municipality. In 2002 there were no investments in this area with the programme of the Federal Government, Brazil Sorridente, but from January to September this year were shared more than 212 thousand reais to the maintenance of these teams and advance in dental care.
In recent years, the Ministry of Health through the Sorridente Brazil has invested in the area of oral health in Minas Gerais. In 2002, there were only 332 teams of oral health. Today there are 1,421, which serve more than 7 million people - an increase of 328%. The programme reaches 519 municipalities mining, with more than 22 million reais invested only this year. Minas Gerais account, now with 163 clinics that provide basic assistance and shelter dental teams of oral health program of Family Health. In addition, the state has 53 Centers of Dental Specialties - other 14 in the deployment phase - distributed in 49 cities in the mining area. From January to August this year, these centers in Minas Gerais received more than 3.6 million reais.
