10) Guimarães: Half of the children has the teeth damaged

Over fifty per cent of children of Guimarães has the teeth damaged to 6 years, according to a study the Institute of Health of the High Ave (ISAVE). Faculty and students from Institute studied 1,200 children in the District, concluding that, at 3 years, the number of cariogenic does not exceed the 17%. But, from that age and up to 6 years, it hardly suffers greatly increased.
However, in the county, there are already initiatives to counter the teeth damaged such as GUISO - Guimarães the Sorrir, a program of oral health. Alexandra Santos, doctor of Public Health, said that the GUISO aims to 'make the diagnosis of the situation' and see how is the Council towards the targets of the National Program for the Promotion of Oral Health.
The doctor also revealed that studied the snacks for children to make comparisons and identify strategies for schools. "The objective is to correct the food in schools, changing habits of oral hygiene. We want a change of habits in school and hope to continue in the family, "materialized the same prescription.
The World Health Organization (WHO) claims that in 2020, eighty per cent of children under 6 years is free of cárie. Mário Rui Araújo, coordinator of the Course of Oral Hygiene of ISAVE, alert to the fact that they can make huge programs "to change habits but not all are effective." For this to happen, these programs must take into account the reality of the situation, define the targets to intervene, are pedagogically appeal and contarem with the participation of the entire community, from families to teachers, through the local authorities and experts in health.
The ISAVE is located in Povoa do Lanhoso and now has 1,600 students.
