183. The role of the LBV (Legion of Good Will) in community health (VII)

PAULO OLIVEIRA
Every day, hundreds of children in neighborhoods of Porto, is collected by the Legion of Good Will (LBV) and distributed by the centers of the institution or other places where they spend the day, such as schools and ATLS. Hired by LBV to work in the "Happy Smile", Paulo Oliveira monitor the oral health of more than 1,200 children, "many of whom never got a brush.
Decided to work on this project "because I like the community, or was a health center or vines for LBV and here, working with a wider variety of people, from addicts to prostitutes. Has been at Braga and the Alentejo, 'where there are fewer cavities than in the north,' says, but this "is a [Greater Porto] neediest.
Besides the theoretical part, the oral hygienist develops a series of practical activities that attempt to promote the prevention of oral health in the population. "We have proposed to work in Guimarães and elsewhere, but we have capacity. The actions will vary: "Today we talk about sugar, the next time we make a visit to this center may be on the caries or plaque.
The children respond well and participate, because many do not have this care at home, and are not encouraged by the family. Therefore, the work is, too, by talking to parents, a task that "is not always easy.
Still, Paulo Oliveira acknowledges that "it was good to have more doctors dentists to help. But for lack of time, availability or information, few participate. "
