The Dentistry in Portugal is a level playing field by two different professionals: Stomatologists Doctors and Dentists. Doctors. Stomatologists are professional graduates in medicine who later specialize in stomatology, exercising in public / private hospitals and clinics. The Dentists are licensed professionals in dentistry and exert almost exclusively in clinical, which is a recent degree in Portuguese panorama, while there is a tendency to decrease the number of Stomatologists Doctors, as space available for specialty boarding school in Stomatology they are increasingly less.
Both are trained to identify, diagnose and treat all oral diseases and jaws, and the structures attached thereto, either medical or surgical manner. The big difference lies in their job classification and years of training: Doctors Stomatologists are included in hospital medical career, while Dentists do not currently have any associated career.
After graduating in medicine, to obtain the specialty of stomatology, doctors attending the Specialty Internship which lasts for four years. After the final exam of the Stomatology boarding become assistants Hospital of Stomatology and can get the title Specialist in Stomatology by the Medical Association.
